Vida ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application and services.
1. Information We Collect
1.1 Information You Provide
- Account Information: Name, email address, profile picture, and authentication credentials when creating an account through Google Sign-In, Apple Sign-In, or direct registration.
- Profile Information: Bio, profile statistics, community engagement metrics, and user reviews/ratings you receive from other users.
- Marks/Reports: Information about community needs you create or flag, including descriptions, categories (Cleanup, Errands, Food Donation, Repair, Education, Other), photos, location data, estimated duration, and urgency levels.
- Event Information: Details about community events you create or register for, including event location, date, time, volunteer spots, and registration status.
- Communications: Messages and interactions with other users through temporary chat features, comments on marks, and event discussions.
- Content: Photos, descriptions, and other content you submit when creating or responding to help requests or events.
1.2 Automatically Collected Information
- Location Information: With your permission, we collect precise location data using GPS to show you nearby marks and events, enable map functionality (powered by MapTiler), and allow you to flag locations. Location data is stored with geographic coordinates (latitude/longitude) and converted to readable addresses.
- Device Information: Device type, operating system, unique device identifiers (for anonymous usage prior to login), mobile network information, and push notification tokens.
- Usage Data: Information about how you interact with the app, including features used, actions taken, marks claimed, events attended, map interactions, and filter preferences.
- Log Data: IP address, access times, app crashes, API calls, and other diagnostic data.
- Authentication Data: OAuth tokens from Google or Apple when you sign in using third-party authentication services.
- Analytics Data: App performance metrics, user engagement data, and usage patterns collected through analytics tools (such as Google Analytics and Mixpanel).
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the collected information to:
- Provide, maintain, and improve our services, including map functionality and real-time mark updates
- Authenticate your identity using Google Sign-In or Apple Sign-In
- Create and manage your user account and profile
- Connect you with community members who need help or can provide assistance
- Display nearby marks (help requests) and community events based on your location
- Enable communication between users through temporary chat, comments, and event discussions
- Send push notifications about nearby help opportunities, responses to your marks, event updates, claimed marks, and app updates
- Process and display your marks, including moderation and approval workflows
- Track user statistics, reviews, and community engagement metrics for profiles
- Render custom map styles and geolocation features through MapTiler services
- Enable mark clustering, filtering (by category, availability, completion status), and search functionality
- Manage event registrations and volunteer spot allocations
- Ensure safety and prevent fraud, abuse, spam, or other harmful activities through moderation systems
- Analyze usage patterns through analytics tools to improve user experience
- Request app reviews and ratings when appropriate
- Comply with legal obligations including GDPR and US children's privacy laws
- Enforce our Terms of Service and community standards
3. Information Sharing and Disclosure
3.1 With Other Users
When you create a mark, respond to a help request, or participate in events, certain information will be visible to other Vida community members, including:
- Your name and profile picture
- The location of marks you create or claim
- Your profile statistics and community reviews/ratings
- Comments and messages you post on marks or events
- Your registration status for community events
3.2 Third-Party Services
We share information with third-party service providers who perform services on our behalf:
- Authentication Services: Google (Google Sign-In) and Apple (Apple Sign-In) for account authentication and OAuth token management
- Map Services: MapTiler for rendering maps, displaying user location, and geolocation features
- Database and Hosting: Supabase for cloud database hosting, data storage, and real-time updates
- Analytics Providers: Google Analytics and Mixpanel for usage analytics and app performance monitoring
- Push Notification Services: Apple Push Notification Service (APNS) and Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) for sending notifications
- Automation Services: n8n for workflow automation, mark moderation, and data processing
3.3 Legal Requirements
We may disclose information if required by law or in response to valid requests by public authorities (e.g., court orders, subpoenas), including:
- Compliance with GDPR (EU data protection regulations)
- Compliance with COPPA (US Children's Online Privacy Protection Act)
- Response to legal requests from law enforcement
3.4 Business Transfers
In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you before your information is transferred and becomes subject to a different privacy policy.
4. Location Data
Location data is central to Vida's functionality. We use your location to:
- Show you help opportunities near you
- Allow you to flag locations that need assistance
- Connect you with others in your community
You can control location permissions through your device settings. Note that disabling location services may limit your ability to use certain features of the app.
5. Data Security
We implement appropriate technical and organizational security measures to protect your personal information. However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
6. Data Retention
We retain your personal information for as long as necessary to provide our services and fulfill the purposes outlined in this Privacy Policy, unless a longer retention period is required by law.
7. Your Rights and Choices
You have the following rights regarding your personal information:
- Access: Request access to the personal information we hold about you, including your account data, marks, events, and chat history
- Correction: Request correction of inaccurate or incomplete information through your profile settings or by contacting us
- Deletion: Request deletion of your personal information and account. You can delete your account through the app settings, which will remove your profile, marks, and associated data. Note that some information may be retained for legal compliance or legitimate business purposes.
- Data Portability: Request a copy of your data in a structured, machine-readable format (JSON or CSV) including your marks, events, profile information, and activity history
- Objection: Object to our processing of your personal information for specific purposes
- Withdraw Consent: Withdraw consent for data processing at any time, including location tracking, push notifications, and analytics
- Opt-Out of Analytics: Disable analytics tracking through your device settings or app preferences
- Control Notifications: Manage push notification preferences through your device settings or in-app notification settings
- Manage Third-Party Access: Revoke access to Google or Apple authentication through your respective account settings
GDPR Rights: If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), you have additional rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), including the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.
California Privacy Rights: If you are a California resident, you have rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) to request information about the categories of personal information we collect and how we use it.

8. Children's Privacy
Vida is not intended for children under the age of 13 (or 16 in the European Economic Area). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe we have collected information from a child, please contact us immediately.
9. International Data Transfers
Your information may be transferred to and processed in countries other than your country of residence. We ensure appropriate safeguards are in place to protect your information in accordance with this Privacy Policy.
10. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any material changes by posting the new Privacy Policy in the app and updating the "Last Updated" date. Your continued use of Vida after changes become effective constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
11. Third-Party Authentication
When you sign in using Google or Apple authentication:
- We receive basic profile information (name, email, profile picture) from these services
- We store OAuth tokens securely to maintain your authenticated session
- You can revoke Vida's access through your Google or Apple account settings at any time
- These services have their own privacy policies that govern how they handle your information
We do not have access to your Google or Apple passwords, and we do not share your Vida activity with these services beyond what is required for authentication.
12. Maps and Geolocation Services
Vida uses MapTiler for map rendering and geolocation features. When you use the map:
- Your device's location is used to center the map and show nearby marks/events
- Map tiles and styling data are loaded from MapTiler's servers
- Your location queries may be processed by MapTiler to convert coordinates to readable addresses
- MapTiler may collect usage data according to their privacy policy
You can disable location services at any time through your device settings, though this will limit map functionality.
13. Temporary Chat and Communications
Vida may offer temporary chat features to facilitate communication between users about marks and events:
- Chat messages are stored temporarily and may be deleted after a period of inactivity
- Chat history may be retained for moderation and safety purposes
- You should not share sensitive personal information (phone numbers, home addresses, financial information) through chat
- We may review chat messages to enforce community standards and respond to reports of abuse
14. User Reviews and Ratings
Other users may leave reviews and ratings on your profile based on their interactions with you. These reviews:
- Are visible to other Vida users
- May affect your profile statistics and community standing
- Can be reported if they violate community standards
- Are subject to moderation to ensure accuracy and appropriateness
15. Analytics and Performance Monitoring
We use analytics tools (Google Analytics, Mixpanel) to understand how users interact with Vida:
- These tools collect usage data, feature interactions, and app performance metrics
- Data is aggregated and anonymized where possible
- You can opt out of analytics tracking through your app settings
- Analytics help us improve the app, fix bugs, and develop new features
16. Push Notifications
With your permission, we send push notifications about:
- Nearby marks and events that match your interests
- Responses to marks you've created
- Updates on marks you've claimed
- Event reminders and registration confirmations
- Important app updates and security notices
You can manage notification preferences through your device settings or in-app notification settings.
17. Third-Party Links and Services
Our app may contain links to third-party websites or services. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of these third parties. We encourage you to review their privacy policies.
